And here is the dramatic disaster of Phil Corso losing his roof during that big monsoon storm on a Saturday, a few weeks ago. Phil's was one of the first 10 houses ever build in Carefree. His "flying roof" was stopped by his neighbor's house quite a distance away. Phil is now dukeing it out with his insurance company. Yikes!

American Legion Post 34 to honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day with special event
Faces of Freedom, American Legion Post 34’s theme for its 75th anniversary, will host a unique evening event to pay homage to National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 6 PM.
In the United States, the third Friday in September honors POWs and MIAs. Each year since 1989, a presidential proclamation brings the nation together to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by the military men and women who are imprisoned or unaccounted for as a result of their military service. Approximately 82,000 Americans remain missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf War and other conflicts.
The American Legion is committed to the return of living POWs, repatriation of the remains of the fallen from war zones abroad, or a determination through convincing evidence that neither is possible. Post members and the public are invited to gather in the Al Morgan Hall for this formal occasion featuring guest speaker Tom Kirk, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot in Korea, and Vietnam, including spending five-and-a-half years in the Hanoi Hilton. Following the keynote speaker, there will be a toast to the missing while enjoying some incredible appetizers. This event is open to the public.

American Legion Post 34 elects Steve Snider president of the American Legion Riders
American Legion Post 34 has elected Steve Snider president of the American Legion Riders.
The Wisconsin native became involved in Post 34 in 2014 and comes from a family of veterans.
“The more I got involved, the more I realized that this organization was a place where I could serve those who have served this country and the community,” says Snider. “My wife Susie joined the Post 34 auxiliary as her first husband was a Vietnam vet who passed away from Agent Orange exposure. We love being a part of Post 34 and it has become a large part of our lives.”
A passionate and long-time motorcycle rider, Snider has been involved with various motorcycle organizations.
“I have had a passion for motorcycles and the lifestyle my whole life and hope that, God willing, I will be able to continue riding for years to come,” adds Snider. “I am honored and humbled to serve as the American Legion Rider president,” says Snider. I look forward to working with the leaders of each Post 34 family as we build more unity so we can accomplish the missions and goals set before us. I am excited to serve during Post 34’s 75th anniversary year. And, I also enjoy serving as pastor for worship services at Post 34 in the Al Morgan Hall at 8 AM on Sunday mornings.”

Faces of Freedom will produce a signature Vietnam War event on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 11 AM to 8 PM at American Legion Post 34. The Welcome Home and Frets for Vets event is part of the veterans’ 75th anniversary.
Post 34 will hold a prestigious welcome home celebration to honor its 315 Vietnam War veteran Post members. It is the largest event of the many created by Post 34 this year to honor whose who served in Vietnam in the name of freedom. The doors open at 11 AM when a large contingent of Legion Riders from Post 34 and area posts, pull into Post 34 in grand style to celebrate and Welcome Home Vietnam veterans. At 12 PM, Post 34 will feature a four-hour meal and two “Good Morning, Vietnam” shows, 1 PM and 3 PM, featuring an exciting nine-member band – The Tributaries – playing music from the 1950s through the mid-1975. Along with a number of professional musicians, guest singer Mindy Ronstadt (Linda Ronstadt’s niece) and the Manhattan Dolls will perform. Tickets for the Good Morning, Vietnam shows, which are $20, can be purchased at the Post (after 10 AM weekdays and weekends). From 4-8 PM, the event kicks into explosive musical excellence as attendees enjoy the nostalgic band Flashback as they take music lovers back in time with the exciting sights and sounds from the era. The Welcome Home and Frets for Vets event is open to the public.

Cave Creek Museum to participate in annual Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
Cave Creek Museum will be part of Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on Saturday, September 17 from 1-4:30 PM. Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day is an annual celebration of curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums, like the Cave Creek Museum, provide free entry to anyone who presents a Museum Day ticket (up to two people). Tickets may be acquired by visiting smithsonianmag.com.
“This event provides the public with a first peek at new exhibits,” says Evelyn Johnson, the museum’s executive director. “Museum lovers from around the Valley come to check out what we have and plan for a return trip if they have downloaded passes to evaluate several museums,” adds Johnson. “Or, they stay to see our exhibits thoroughly. It is a fun day to show off history and suggest upcoming events.”
Museum Day represents a national commitment to access, equality and inclusion goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors – it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. “We opened the doors in October 2021 with a record number of visitors,” says Evelyn Johnson, museum executive director. “Come and study our wonderful collection of pre-history pottery and artifacts in the Archaeology Wing, linger in the History Wing to follow Cave Creek's evolution from a military outpost to the town we know and love today. admire the amazing art on loan by local and amazing artist Beth Zink. Of course, our outdoor exhibits have been expanded since our last season. I encourage members and visitors to bring friends and families to the museum see this year’s exciting exhibits.”
Kiwanis Family Fun Day comes to Cave Creek Museum: Become a Desert Explorer!
September 6, 2022, Cave Creek, Arizona – Cave Creek Museum will host Kiwanis Family Fun Day, “Become a Desert Explorer!” Members and guests will learn who eats whom in the desert at the museum’s predator and prey station. In addition, discover the mysteries behind how plants survive in the desert with no rain and hot temperatures at the scrubby skins station. Attendees can earn a special bookmark when they become desert savvy. Registration is required at cavecreekmuseum.org. The event is free thanks to the support of Kiwanis Club of Carefree. The first one is October 8 then it is the second Sunday of the month other than February 5 and May 21.
Cave Creek Museum Presents plans ”The Dust Never Settles” event
On Saturday, October 15 from 2-4 PM, Cave Creek Museum Presents will showcase a session featuring Stacey Goodman, author of "The Dust Never Settles," a riveting, first-hand account from inside Ground Zero
Cave Creek resident Goodman was a Suffolk County police officer who had federal disaster training in 2001. When she was called to help in a highly secured area of Ground Zero, she witnessed first-hand the horrific details of the terror attacks that decimated the world's financial center. Her new book describes her 23 days on the pile and working at the center of the rescue and recovery efforts.
Goodman has been featured numerous times in national and local media. She will share aspects of her life and career that prepared her. Members are free and non-members can attend the program with a museum admission ticket. Sign up at cavecreekmuseum.org. Reservations recommended.
Cave Creek Museum to open its lauded Arizona Gold Mining Experience
The Cave Creek Museum is preparing to open the Arizona Gold Mining Experience, which is a special event that visitors and museum members can enjoy the second Saturday of every month.
The expansive outdoor experience begins in the museum’s lobby with a lively retelling of the Cave Creek mining district's history. Guests then move outside for numerous demonstrations that showcase the hard rock ore extraction process for which Cave Creek is renowned.
The excitement builds with the operation of the amazing Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway, Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The 10, 1,000-lb. stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound ore removed from the mine into fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to Cave Creek Museum, which has the only fully operational mining stamp mill in its original mining district in Arizona; it is located and located just five miles from its site on the mountain. The Golden Reef stamp mill runs the second Saturday of every month through May. The giant stamp mill also is connected to a working tramway and ore carts that carry the ore to be pulverized to the stamp mill.
The experience continues as guests peer into a mineshaft to show the blasting techniques used by hard rock miners. Next, onto the new blacksmith shop for a demonstration of the many skills used when parts and tools had to be fabricated onsite.
Guests then are encouraged to try their luck at the gold panning station, where museum volunteers show visitors how to pan for ore and minerals just like the prospectors did.
Afterward, visitors enjoy a tour of the museum's inside exhibits, including the Feast of Rocks (a mineral display) on loan from the Arizona Mineral, Mining Museum and Natural Resources Education Museum.
Other exhibits showcasing Arizona’s mining history include historical and archaeology; articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past; the historic first Cave Creek church; and the tuberculosis cabin, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the only known existing tubercular cabin from that era.
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience opens at 10 AM-11:15 PM in the museum lobby and admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors; children under 12 are free. Reservations required.

AARP Smart Driver Program - A refresher Course in Safety and Skills
Saturday, October 22nd and Saturday, December 3rd, 10:30am-2:30pm
Learn new driving techniques, rules of the road, defensive driving, and how to minimize distractions. Trained volunteers instruct the AARP Smart Driver classroom course, our preeminent national older driver safety program, serving the 50+ population for more than 30 years. The course enables drivers to refresh their driving skills and understand how to adjust to age-related challenges. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads. Since the program’s inception in 1979, more than 15 million participants have completed the course. Materials are included. Completion of course may entitle you to an auto insurance discount (check with your insurer). Bring a sack lunch.

National Society Daughters of the British Empire – Annual Christmas Fundraiser Tea

The DBE extends greetings to women of British, or Commonwealth of Nations birth or ancestry, residing in the USA to join us in fellowship, fundraising, and a great ‘cuppa’ tea. The tea is the DBE’s annual Christmas Fundraiser Tea. The typical British Tea will include finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream ad jam, petit fours, and of course, tea. Since 1909, the DBE has led the effort to serve and care for seniors across the US. In addition to establishing four senior living facilities, every chapter directly supports their communities through individual partnerships with local charities. Members are professionals, businesswomen, and homemakers with common interests and heritage, who meet regularly for business and social events with the common cause of philanthropy.

Yoga Fusion

Please join Elizabeth Boisson for an intermediate-level course of Yoga Fusion on Thursdays from 12:00-1:00 pm! We will start with breathing exercises, go through a series of stretching movements to open our hearts and our hips, and then move into Vinyasa or Flow yoga and several standing sequences, including balance exercises. We finish with 5 minutes of Savasana at the end of class.

AARP Smart Driver Program - A refresher Course in Safety and Skills
Saturday, October 22nd and Saturday, December 3rd, 10:30am-2:30pm
Learn new driving techniques, rules of the road, defensive driving, and how to minimize distractions. Trained volunteers instruct the AARP Smart Driver classroom course, our preeminent national older driver safety program, serving the 50+ population for more than 30 years. The course enables drivers to refresh their driving skills and understand how to adjust to age-related challenges. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads. Since the program’s inception in 1979, more than 15 million participants have completed the course. Materials are included. Completion of course may entitle you to an auto insurance discount (check with your insurer). Bring a sack lunch.

National Society Daughters of the British Empire – Annual Christmas Fundraiser Tea

The DBE extends greetings to women of British, or Commonwealth of Nations birth or ancestry, residing in the USA to join us in fellowship, fundraising, and a great ‘cuppa’ tea. The tea is the DBE’s annual Christmas Fundraiser Tea. The typical British Tea will include finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream ad jam, petit fours, and of course, tea. Since 1909, the DBE has led the effort to serve and care for seniors across the US. In addition to establishing four senior living facilities, every chapter directly supports their communities through individual partnerships with local charities. Members are professionals, businesswomen, and homemakers with common interests and heritage, who meet regularly for business and social events with the common cause of philanthropy.

He graduated from ASU and worked as a natural resource conservationist. A second career took him to Nashville, writing and teaching songwriting and guitar. In his first novel, “Cactizonians’ Treasure,” he takes readers on a vivid journey through the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and Mexico in a fascinating twist on a lost treasure legend. Bart and his wife live near Tucson, Arizona. His hobbies include writing haiku, travel, and the pursuit of the perfect chili relleno.

David Stanasolovich writes under the pseudonym, Andrew Colvin, and lives in Phoenix with his wife, Marcy, four cats and a parrot. He was a long-time resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico where his novel, The Mad Girl, takes place. The author is an engineer and manager in the high tech industry. The Mad Girl is the author’s first novel, and he is currently writing the sequel. He has always been interested in the impact of trauma on individuals and how they react differently, some finding strength while others are transformed into something terrible. This was one of the inspirations for writing The Mad Girl.

With six hospitals, three of which are Arizona designated and American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 trauma centers, HonorHealth also has a new state of the art first of its kind combination satellite emergency room/urgent care as well as over 65 medical and specialty treatment groups. HonorHealth is a valued community partner and resource. With six hospitals, three of which are Arizona designated and American College of Surgeons verified Level 1 trauma centers, HonorHealth also has a new state of the art first of its kind combination satellite emergency room/urgent care as well as over 65 medical and specialty treatment groups. The number one cause of Level 1 traumas that come to the trauma centers is fall injuries resulting in a myriad of serious injuries and death. This Falls Prevention Awareness program is one class that introduces and discusses the causes of falls, the results of falls and methods of the prevention of falls. Journey through the Percy Jackson series and Greek myths set in modern times with this book club! Every three weeks we will read the next installment in the series. At each meeting we will discuss the book, the myths from which it references, and do a variety of crafts and activities. The series follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy finds out he is a demi-god. Dangerous quests and adventures ensue with the help other demi-gods where they encounter villains and monsters of Greek mythology in modern times. In Hoard of the Dragon Queen, the Sword Coast is under siege and it is up to players to stop the Cult of the Dragon from freeing the dragon queen Tiamat. Both seasoned players and people new to RPGs are welcome! If you are able, please come with a filled out Level 2 character sheet (blank ones are available in the library). Jubilate Conservatory of Music, sponsored by Kiwanis, is open to children of all ages. As a school of classical music, young students learn to read and write music through in-person music classes at Desert Foothills Library. Imagination Lab Open Hours
Fridays, 12pm-4pm
Drop into the Imagination Lab to craft to your heart’s content! Craft supplies will be made available for any children and teens who need to express their creativity. Additionally, children are invited to make use of the puppet theater! There will be no staff supervision, so participants need to be accompanied by an adult.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians Book Club
Thursday, September 8, 3:30-4:30pm
Journey through the Percy Jackson series and Greek myths set in modern times with this book club! Every three weeks we will read the next installment in the series. At each meeting we will discuss the book, the myths from which it references, and do a variety of crafts and activities. The series follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy finds out he is a demi-god. Dangerous quests and adventures ensue with the help other demi-gods where they encounter villains and monsters of Greek mythology in modern times. Copies of the books are available for checkout in the library – please read the book before the meeting.

Little Explorers: Sensory Playdate

Young children are just starting to explore and understand the world. Part of this is through sensory play and exploration where children encounter different shapes, textures, colors and objects. Manipulating objects expands imagination, encourages cooperation, develops problem-solving and fine motor skills. Dungeons & Dragons: Hoard of the Dragon Queen Session 2

Join Librarian Heather as she leads adventurers through the story of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, explaining D&D basics along the way. In Hoard of the Dragon Queen, the Sword Coast is under siege and it is up to players to stop the Cult of the Dragon from freeing the dragon queen Tiamat. Both seasoned players and people new to RPGs are welcome! If you are able, please come with a filled out Level 2 character sheet (blank ones are available in the library). There will also be premade characters available on the day of. If you missed the last meeting – don’t worry! We’ll find a way to introduce your character to the party.

Forever Fused Glass Flowers – Tues., Sept. 20 & Sept. 27, 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Explore the art of fused glass with an experienced glass artist, new to the Holland Center! Students in this two day class will complete two beautiful and dramatic flowers. On the first day of class (Sept. 20 - 1:00 - 4:00), you will be designing, and arranging the glass to form a flower. Once this is done, the flowers will be put in a kiln to fuse, then slumped into a mold that will create the flower shape (a total of 48 hours in the kiln).The second day of class (Sept. 27), the flower will be assembled to give it a stem and gold or silver paint can be added as an embellishment. Flowers will be ready to take home at the end of the second week. Class Cost: $75. There will be a $10 materials fee to be given to the instructor at the first class. Gourd Doll – Friday, Sept. 23, 9-3. Create a unique doll, perfect for the Fall season, using something that most people have never worked with: Gourds! Darlene, your expert instructor, (you many have seen her at many of our shows), says "In this class you will create a detailed Gourd Doll or as I call them my girls with Attitude. I'll supply the gourd, mini pots and gourd base. I will have a limited number of tools available to share including Dremel tools. I will supply masks, gloves, paints, tape, stain, feathers and beads that you can use to make your creation". Designs can be created with a wood burner or tape. Then dyed. So take a chance with gourds, and you will be surprised! $89. Please wear old clothes and bring lunch or snack and something to drink. This is an all-day class, from 9:00 - 3:00. No experience necessary!
Take Charge of Your Health - Monday, Sept. 26, 2022. 10:00 – 11:30 am. Are you ready to learn how to navigate our crazy system of health care? Do you need to understand what procedures are required, or just recommended? These are just some of the topics that will be covered in this very valuable 3 - part "Consumer Health Lecture Series". In this first session you will get an overview of health care systems and health insurance (including Medicare), a breakdown of heath care costs and coverages, help in finding your way around the health care system, and help in determining when, and which health care you need. Session#2 is on Oct. 24 and Session #3 is on Nov. 28. Barbara Hewitt has been teaching in all areas of health sciences for many years. She is a strong advocate for preventive health practices and for health improvement. You get professional looking results for minimal effort! If you missed Mimi's other classes, here is another opportunity to get the basic concepts and tips of making Gelli Prints. Mimi will take you through the individual steps to help you create your own Gelli prints (they are really cool). Forever Fused Glass Flowers – Tues., Sept. 20 & Sept. 27, 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Explore the art of fused glass with an experienced glass artist, new to the Holland Center! Students in this two day class will complete two beautiful and dramatic flowers. On the first day of class (Sept. 20 - 1:00 - 4:00), you will be designing, and arranging the glass to form a flower. Once this is done, the flowers will be put in a kiln to fuse, then slumped into a mold that will create the flower shape (a total of 48 hours in the kiln).The second day of class (Sept. 27), the flower will be assembled to give it a stem and gold or silver paint can be added as an embellishment. Flowers will be ready to take home at the end of the second week. Class Cost: $75. There will be a $10 materials fee to be given to the instructor at the first class. Sports in America – Jim Sherbert Lecture Series. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 4:00 – 5:30. Did you know that September is perhaps the most sports filled month of the year with baseball still in swing, college and professional football having everyone hopeful for their favorite team, golf at its peak and even hockey is beginning its season? This is the topic for Jim's upcoming September Lecture, and you won't be disappointed! Compared to Jim's other lectures this one has subject matter that is a bit lighter, but so much fun! Giant Paper Flower – Rose – Thurs. Sept 22, 1:00 – 3:00. In this brand new class led by Mimi Damrauer, you will learn how to construct a beautiful elegant giant paper flower that you can display on its own or as a part of a flower wall. Gourd Doll – Friday, Sept. 23, 9-3. Create a unique doll, perfect for the Fall season, using something that most people have never worked with: Gourds! Darlene, your expert instructor, (you many have seen her at many of our shows), says "In this class you will create a detailed Gourd Doll or as I call them my girls with Attitude. I'll supply the gourd, mini pots and gourd base. I will have a limited number of tools available to share including Dremel tools. I will supply masks, gloves, paints, tape, stain, feathers and beads that you can use to make your creation". Designs can be created with a wood burner or tape. Then dyed. So take a chance with gourds, and you will be surprised! $89. Please wear old clothes and bring lunch or snack and something to drink. This is an all-day class, from 9:00 - 3:00. No experience necessary!
Take Charge of Your Health - Monday, Sept. 26, 2022. 10:00 – 11:30 am. Are you ready to learn how to navigate our crazy system of health care? Do you need to understand what procedures are required, or just recommended? These are just some of the topics that will be covered in this very valuable 3 - part "Consumer Health Lecture Series". In this first session you will get an overview of health care systems and health insurance (including Medicare), a breakdown of heath care costs and coverages, help in finding your way around the health care system, and help in determining when, and which health care you need. Session#2 is on Oct. 24 and Session #3 is on Nov. 28. Barbara Hewitt has been teaching in all areas of health sciences for many years. She is a strong advocate for preventive health practices and for health improvement. Gelli Printing 101 – Thurs., Sept. 29 – 1:00 – 3:00. Join award winning fiber artist Mimi Damrauer for a fun class learning to paint paper in Gelli Printing 101! No experience necessary. You get professional looking results for minimal effort! If you missed Mimi's other classes, here is another opportunity to get the basic concepts and tips of making Gelli Prints. Mimi will take you through the individual steps to help you create your own Gelli prints (they are really cool). You will be making quality prints with inexpensive materials, learning how to add texture and develop your images with rubber stamping and basic texture tools. You will be able to take home original washi tape that you make with some of your beautiful papers! Mimi Damrauer is a local working artist, who has been teaching classes in the Valley for years.
