Planning Director Stacey Bridge-Denzak explained that the developers of the Hampton Inn and The View Carefree townhomes had requested an extension for the closure on Easy Street between Carefree Dr. and Nonchalant Ave. until November 1st. The closure originally expired as of August 31st. The projects have been held up due to Covid 19 and various construction delays.
The View also requested a temporary closure on Carefree Dr., which has a storm drain running deep under the street, and for sewer improvements. That closure would start in late September and end in mid October. The owner of The View would coordinate the closure with the nearby businesses. These requests were being made to ensure the safety of the construction areas as well as the safety of the general public.

Councilman Gene Orrico pointed out that a No vote would immediately stymie the projects and would make no sense. They need the closures to make these projects viable. Ms. Bridge-Denzak agreed, saying they are needed to move the projects ahead in a timely and safe manner. Gary Neiss added that, as usual, the infrastructure is under the street and needs to be accessed.
Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer noted that the good news was that these street closures should be done by the time residents are returning for the winter. Vice Mayor John Crane said it was most important to make sure all the businesses that are even remotely impacted are aware of the closures. Everyone agreed that should be done ASAP.
Councilman Stephen Hatcher asked if Mr. Neiss had a feel for the number of businesses that are active in Carefree now, or if most were pretty much still shut down. Mr. Neiss replied that quite a few are doing a good business. Businesses are at a pivot point now where they have to adapt to the "new normal". Some are able to adapt better than others. Carefree is looking to do more with the Town's outside assets, in partnership with the businesses, using the Gardens and the Pavilion. "It's good old entrepreneurship here in Carefree."
Mr. Hatcher said it is interesting to note that ZOOM, the company which hosts these online meetings, has shown a 400% increase in their revenue over the past quarter.
The street closures were approved 6-0. Councilman Vince D'Aliesio left early due to a former commitment.
