Tributes to Arthur Gimson
Hi Lyn,
I found some information in Arthur's computer and used it to create something of an obituary, something of a biography, something of an I'm-not-sure-what - but I wanted to pass it on to you to share with anyone you may see fit. I will keep you in the loop if/as we move forward with any plans for a service - we are still in the discussion phase of that. Please do pass on my sincere appreciation for the kindnesses that have been extended thus far.
Thank you for your kind words, Lyn. I keep thinking it will get easier as the days go by, but it doesn't. Perhaps it will just take more time...
Thank you again - your kindness genuinely helps.
Best regards,
Lara Hoover

On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, Arthur Gimson passed away at the age of 81.
Arthur was born on July 13, 1939, to Henry and Edna Gimson. He was raised in Watford, England, with his elder brother, Anthony, and twin brother, John. Arthur describes his early childhood memories as walking to primary school carrying gas masks past bombed houses and shops carrying little to no merchandise. They were told what to do in case the air-raid sirens were to sound signaling German attacks. He and his brothers slept on mattresses in an in-house bomb shelter.
Arthur attended the Watford Grammar School for Boys, followed by Westminster Technical College, the UK equivalent of a community college. He graduated third in his class from the School of Hospitality Management in June 1958. From there, Arthur entered what would become his career in hospitality. He first worked in London’s finest hotel group, the Savoy Hotel Group (probably best known for Claridge’s), and then spent several years perfecting his craft (and his French) in France.
Arthur then returned to Claridge’s, and shortly thereafter, in 1963, began his career with Hilton at the newly constructed London Hilton where he met Mr. Conrad Hilton, Mr. Barron Hilton, and other senior officers. In Arthur’s words, “it’s not what you know…!” From London, Arthur transferred to the Washington D.C. Hilton in 1965 and, as one of his favorite shirts says, became, “British Born but American By Choice.”
Arthur worked for Hilton in Kansas City, St. Louis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Troy (MI), Phoenix, Kauai (HI), and London, totaling 28 years with the company. He then engaged in a career as an independent contractor in business and management consulting, doing extensive work with investors both domestically and throughout the world.
In the early 2000s, Arthur finally settled down to a beautiful home in scenic Carefree, Arizona. Arthur was an extremely loyal and patriotic American, serving on the Carefree town council, numerous organizations and committees, and volunteered as part of the Foothills Caring Corps. He was an avid hockey fan, and had a twenty-year love/hate relationship with the Arizona Coyotes hockey team, having season tickets for many years.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his daughter Lara, stepsons Jeffrey, Marc, and Sean, his beloved Huskies, Katya and Tanya, and his brothers Anthony and John, who still reside in England.
Memorial arrangements are yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Thank you so very much, and may you and yours be well.
Best regards,
Lara Hoover
(Lyn's note: Lara is Arthur's daughter.)
Lyn,
It was with deep sorrow that I learned of Arthur Gimson’s passing. Arthur was a blessing to Carefree. His contributions to all Carefree residents while serving on the Town Council, to the Foothills Caring Corps and to all of his many friends and neighbors were meaningful and many. Arthur always had a well-reasoned point of view which he articulated well. I will miss him dearly. My condolences to his family.
Mayor Les Peterson
This is sad news indeed. I will send a condolence note. And, I am sure we will pass a note within Town Hall.
Best regards,
John Crane
How sad. I will miss his stories, humor and positive attitude. He loved this community.

Always looked forward to Arthur’s letters. He was a wonderful gentleman. He will be missed

Arthur was a good man. We had breakfast together last year during the council election, and he gave me his insight on life that provided some good education. The biggest takeaway that I received from that breakfast was that Arthur told me that honesty was the most important character trait that someone should always maintain, regardless of ridicule. Halfway through breakfast, a fellow town council candidate approached our table, said hello, and asked Arthur if he voted for him. Arthur said he did not. The candidate asked why, and Arthur replied: "you changed." And just like that, the candidate stuck out his hand, wished Arthur well, and walked away. My jaw dropped. Arthur could have lied and said that he voted for this person, and would have been none the wiser, but Arthur just finished telling me how important it was to maintain honesty in the face of pressure, and the timing of this interaction could not have been any better. Rest in peace, Arthur Gimson.

I just wanted to thank you for sharing that story about my dad. It is so typically Arthur. He could be an ornery son of a gun, but he was nothing if not principled in word and action as evidenced by your experience. As you might guess, I am struggling horribly with this loss, but stories like yours bring a familiar pride and admiration to my heart.
Thank you again,
Lara Hoover
Hi Ms Hoover,
I'm a 2nd term Town Council member for the Town of Carefree. Arthur was one of the first people that befriended me when I ran for my first term in 2018, and re-elected last year. I'm the "young guy" on the council, and Arthur saw enough in me to pass along some wisdom during each of the past two elections. Needless to say, I was reelected last year.
My condolences to you and your family. Arthur looked very thin when we met and told me of his medical bouts recently, but he ate a very large hot cinnamon roll for breakfast the morning we met last spring, and said he hadn't eaten like that in a while, but that he was spoiling himself. That was the last time I saw him, late spring 2020. He also told me to make sure I had at least 2 years of salary saved in the bank for rainy days. I'm working on it.

I got a weird email from someone claiming to be Arthur Gimson, and asking me to go buy a Nike Gift Certificate for his Nephew. When I mentioned this to John he said Arthur passed away earlier this week. I was so sorry to hear that news. He was a wonderful member of our community, and always shared great insights in Carefree Truth. My sincere condolences to his family...
And I deleted that awful phishing email immediately.

(Lyn's note: Someone hacked into Arthur's email and sent that to everyone in his email address book. I heard from a number of others who got the scam email. I got it too. I forwarded the email I got to his daughter so she would be aware of it.)
Yes, I have received several notifications (and received the email myself as well). Unfortunately I do not have access to his email at this time, but do hope to try to address the matter this weekend. I am hoping, based on the rather textbook "scammish" verbiage of the email, that people will recognize it for what it is. Thank you very much for ensuring I was aware of what has transpired.
Best regards,
Lara
Saw your note on Arthur’s passing. How sad, he will be missed. The scammers haven’t wasted any time. The email below came yesterday. Shameless creeps.
