"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

During Current Events, Communications Director Erica Shumaker announced that there will be an open house community workshop this Wednesday, October 12th, from 4-7 PM in the Council Chambers, which she invited all the community to attend, to discuss Town Center revitalization. The purpose of this meeting is to share facts, answer questions, and receive input from Carefree's residents.
There will also be a nonprofit expo on Wednesday, October 19th from 10 AM-1 PM. The non profit expo was proposed by the Desert Foothills Land Trust so residents could learn more about the various organizations and the volunteer opportunities. The expo will be held in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. There are currently 16 organizations participating in this event, all of which provide invaluable services to the community as a whole.

Gary Neiss announced that there would also be open houses coming up to inform citizens of the fire protection history, options, expenses, and funding mechanisms.
Mayor Les Peterson noted that the Council will be coming back in the spring with the proposed updated General Plan, using the same formats. Mayor Peterson and Vice Mayor John Crane encouraged everyone to come to these open houses. The Town will be issuing newsletters, posting signs at the Post Office, and putting information on the Town website. The Vice Mayor pointed out that these provide a chance for residents not only to learn, but also to influence the outcomes.
Mr. Neiss announced that the November Council meeting would be moved up to October 25th, due to the midterm elections. Voting is being held by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Elections Office in the Carefree Council Chambers.
Mayor Peterson announced that at the instigation of Vice Mayor Crane, and with the help of Councilman Vince D'Aliesio, Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) Superintendent, Dr. Cort Monroe, has been appointed to the Economic Development Committee. The Vice Mayor explained that one of the chief impacts discussed at the meeting the day before was the State Legislature passage, and then the veto by the Governor, of sales tax revenue to be used towards transportation infrastructure construction, repair, and maintenance, particularly streets. A secondary highlight was on lower income housing. As one goes south, there are many more homeless people, and people struggling to stay in their homes.
Mayor Peterson said MAG is also responsible for air quality, and is currently over the limits for ozone, which will kick into affect some federal guidelines that will impact future development and probably will require incoming industry to buy ozone credits from the federal government. The ozone is primarily coming from a westerly direction, and statistically, if every vehicle were parked and not used, the Valley would still come close to exceeding the federal guidelines. Water and air purity will become very important issues in the future.
