Dear Mayor Peterson,
As a resident of Carefree Foothills - you may recall - I have been an advocate for transitioning off Cave Creek Water to Carefree Water. I have spoken before the Town Council meetings, written letters, sat through the engineering presentation of the ultimate Carefree Water proposal and was thrilled to learn of a solution that best serves our community. I truly appreciate your leadership throughout the lengthy ongoing process.
Both your “Letter to the Editor" and "Carefree Water Storage Plan Explained” printed in the most recent edition of the Sonoran News explain with eloquence the process of Carefree’s water utility expansion. I know much of local government work seems boring to many of the residence, but the impact touches every member of our community. Numerous council meetings, extensive engineering studies have all lead us to the current proposed water tank location. The details you provide clearly explain the minimal impact on the Boulders water tank location and quite honestly will provide a sound buffer (albeit minimal) to Tom Darlington Drive.
Residents in and outside the Boulders have to understand the Town of Carefree encompasses all homes and as you explained “share the cost” of our community utilities. I waited four hours to speak before the Arizona Corporation Commission to object to Liberty Utilities rate increase. I understand Liberty’s need to recoup their costs to move the waste treatment from the Boulders to the City of Scottsdale. So - if I may - I am helping pay for this expense as a part of the Carefree community. I objected because of the amount of increase and in the end a compromise was reached. That is the process and how it works!
I hope your message about “sharing the cost" to the HOA Board at the Boulders is clear and just as importantly to the 85%+ residents of the Town of Carefree.
Thank you again for your guidance and community leadership!
Best regards,
Jim Dove

Dear Sir or Madam:
I am fully in support of your comments that appeared on the back page of the August 4 issue of The Sonoran News and thank you for bringing more "balance" to the complaints coming from 1-2 residents of the Boulders.
Sincerely and in appreciation,
Jeff and Renee Kerner
Will be interesting to see where our streets, esp Leisure Lane, falls. I’ve asked about repairs (last year) and was told much wouldn’t be done due to the upcoming water issue/project. Hope the timing of repairs can be reassessed and things smoothed out a bit.
Signed-shake rattle and roll (AKA Lori Wolfe)
(Lyn's note: I referred this to Gary Neiss. Lori lives in Sentinel Rock.)
Indeed, the water consolidated project will impact numerous local streets as meters will be replaced, new values installed and in some cases, replacement of deficient water lines will occur. In a coordinated effort, the water consolidation project is being implemented first and then the street maintenance project will follow. More specifically, the subject water improvements are anticipated to be completed within the next 12-18 months and then the street maintenance project will be completed. To invert the order will resulted in damage to the new surface and less aesthetically pleasing solution.
The street assessment discussed at the last Council meeting is typically done every 10 years to re-evaluate the 14 types of distress asphalt experiences in the Desert Southwest and score the streets based upon the distress, determine treatment options to mitigate the distress, package projects and provide a high level cost estimate. Please note that this assessment does not expedite the circumstances or timeline suggested in the aforementioned paragraph.

Lyn,
This seems like a solution in search of a problem. In my 27 years of living in Carefree and going by that stretch of Cave Creek Road multiple times a day, I rarely observe individuals attempting to cross, and then typically early in the morning, if at all. Rather than spending dollars on “outsized” crosswalks, perhaps Carefree should consider what other cities, incidentally of larger size, have implemented, which is lower speed limits in town.
For example, Prescott employs a 25 mph speed limit in most of its streets around the town square. Why not limit the speed between Pima and Tom Darlington on Cave Creek Road to 25 mph and establish well marked crosswalks, (with Paint) at the major intersections along that stretch.
I think this issue should require public input before proceeding.
John Nimsky
Thank you for sharing John’s email with me.
The proposed crosswalk is being requested by residents living in and around the intersection of Tranquil Trail and Cave Creek Road. They continuously have raised safety concerns and would like to ensure a safer solution to cross this specific location on Cave Creek Road.
The design solution could deviate from the originally discussed/referenced HAWK crosswalk signalization system to an introduction of a four way stop (currently a two way stop). The traffic engineer will determine the safest solution from an engineering perspective. Certainly, the introduction of the stop will result in reduced traffic speeds and provide for a more cost effective solution while addressing the safety concerns of these residents.
Gary Neiss
I like the idea of considering a 4 way stop over the other solution. It is less expensive by far and I believe would address the concerns of the residents both from a pedestrian perspective as well as from a driver perspective.
Thanks,
John N.

Healing of Memories Workshop for Women Veterans
Announcing an in-person Healing of Memories Workshop for Women Veterans. It will be held at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, AZ on September 3-5, 2021. The workshop is devoted to women vets only and will provided them with a safe experiential and interactive way to address anger, loss, grief and guilt. The workshop is free of charge to any woman service member or veteran, including all meals and two nights lodging. It begins with dinner at 6pm on Friday, September 3 and ends at 1pm on Sunday, September 5. People who have attended this workshop say that it was a major step in their healing from their psychological and spiritual wounds. Transportation will be provided to those who need it.
In order to ensure the safety of the participants and facilitators at this workshop, we will be following the CDC Coronavirus Guidelines and will be employing additional safety precautions. All participants will be provided their own private rooms.
The Healing of Memories Workshop was created by Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican missionary priest, who in 1990 suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the pro-apartheid government in South Africa. After a long recovery from the bombing, Father Lapsley decided to dedicate his life to helping victims of emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses and other traumatic circumstances.
Any woman service member or veteran who is interested in the workshop may find out more information or register free for the workshop by contacting Mike Wold, US Navy Veteran and workshop coordinator, at 651-687-9767.

Cave Creek Museum to participate in annual Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
Cave Creek Museum will be part of Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on September 18 from 1-4:30 PM. Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day is an annual celebration of curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums, like the Cave Creek Museum, provide free entry to anyone who presents a Museum Day ticket (up to two people). Tickets may be acquired by visiting smithsonianmag.com.
“This event is the first peek at new exhibits by the public,” says Evelyn Johnson, the museum’s interim executive director. “Guests from throughout the Valley come to check out what we have and plan for a return trip if they have downloaded passes to evaluate several museums,” adds Johnson. “Or, they stay to see our exhibits thoroughly. It is a fun day to show off history and suggest upcoming events.”
Museum Day represents a national commitment to access, equality and inclusion goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors – it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. This year, Museum Day represents a return to arts and culture. After spending the past year indoors, it's time to get out and Experience America – the theme of this year's event.
The 51-year-old museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts of the prehistory, history, culture and legacy of the Cave Creek Mining District and the Cave Creek/Carefree foothills area through education, research and interpretive exhibits. The Cave Creek Museum is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, Ariz. Open October through May. The museum can be reached at 480488.2764 or cavecreekmuseum.org. Where History Comes Alive.
