"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

Les Hardy said that in large part because of Carefree's help, cooperation and enthusiasm, two years ago a group of them put on a very successful Wheels & Wings show at the Sky Ranch airport in Carefree. They were held back last year by Covid, but are doing it again this April in partnership with Sky Ranch airport, which is celebrating their 60th anniversary. The show will be held in conjunction with the airport's Open House.
He noted that last time, Carefree closed off part of Cave Creek Road, provided signage, and gave technical assistance, which he hoped they would be willing to do again. He felt it's going to be an even better show than last time and he encouraged everyone to come out to see the cars and planes.
It is free to the public, and will be open on April 2nd from
10 AM - 2 PM. Because of the airport Open House, they are expecting many more planes than last time. The cars will be vintage, 1980 and older. Mr. Hardy noted that Councilman Vince D'Aliesio's 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider will be there in the Italian section.
He said they deeply appreciate all the help and cooperation they get from the Town. It makes their job so much easier and they are very excited to, along with Sky Ranch, put on this great event for the people of Carefree. Mayor Peterson thanked him and said they look forward to it.

Because the final paperwork had not yet been completed by the time of the December 7th meeting, the request for the street closure for Wheels & Wings was heard at the December 14th Council meeting. Mayor Peterson reported that Cave Creek Road will be reduced to one lane from Mule Train Road to Pima Road from 8 AM - 3 PM to accommodate parking for the Wheels & Wings show. This is the same parking configuration that was in place during the first Wheels & Wings event. There were no issues. They were very conscientious in terms of directing traffic. "It's a wonderful event that gets tremendous participation."
Vice Mayor John Crane said cars would be parked diagonally on the dirt along the lane that will be closed. This year, there will be more vans to transport people from their cars to the event. Foothills Caring Corps will provide 2 vans and another one will be supplied by someone else. There might be additional parking allowed at Our Lady of Joy church, although that is not yet a certainty. The event is coming together very well. Last time, they had 2,000 - 3,000 attendees and they expect at least that many this year. Exhibitors and the public will be coming in through different entry points to avoid congestion. "It promises to be a very nice event." The motion to close the street passed unanimously.
