The Town of Carefree received a letter from the Arizona State Land Trust (SLT) expressing their concern over a clause in the Carefree General Plan (GP), which is in the process of being updated. This clause proposes a change in the designated land use of the 48 acres of State Trust land that borders Cave Creek Road near the Carefree airport from its current designation of low density single family homes to park/conservation.
The 48 acres in question contain only scrub desert. The Desert Foothills Land Trust (DFLT) has expressed no interest in obtaining this parcel because it lacks archeological and topographical features required to meet the criteria of the DFLT's preservation mission.

This change in the GP would decrease the value of the parcel. The SLT objects to this change in the land use designation because it has the fiduciary responsibility to maximize the amount of money for which the land is sold at auction, supporting education and other important services.
I put in a Public Records request to the Town and the SLT letter is below. It is vital that the Carefree residents are aware of this issue before the GP comes to the voters for the required approval. The print size came out small when I copied and pasted the pdf, but you can increase it by placing your cursor at the edge of the email window and pulling the window sideways. For some unknown tech reason, page 2 of the same download is even smaller, but the same technique for enlarging the print applies.
