"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

During Current Events at the November 10th Council meeting, Vice Mayor John Crane announced that Veteran's Day was November 11th. He ran through the information below, and encouraged attendance. He reported that the 3 Miler Race had been run the previous Saturday morning. It was quite successful, with a great turn-out, and raised thousands of dollars to help veterans in need. He also noted that the 501(c)3 AT&T Veterans organization, which sponsors the 3 Miler race, acted as the "bank" for the newly finished Carefree Veteran's Memorial Monument in the Carefree Gardens, allowing donations to be run through their website, making the donations tax deductible. They handled all the money. He thanked them, calling them "fantastic".

Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, began at sunrise, 6:57 A.M., when Boy Scouts from local Troop 603 raised the flag at the Veterans Memorial in Carefree. Then, throughout the day until 4 P.M., with a special focus at 11 A.M., 1 P.M. and 3 P.M., visitors were invited to spend time at the Memorial, chat with veterans who helped design and build the Memorial, speak with other vets, and become acquainted with local veterans support organizations such as the Veterans Heritage Project, the Black Mountain Foothills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution Major Winfield Scott Chapter, the Association of the US Army, Institute of Healing of Memories, US Army Recruiters, the Military Order of the World Wars Phoenix Chapter / Arizona Youth Leadership Conference, and American Legion Post 34.
Visitors were asked to social distance and wear masks.
While there were not speakers and music as in years past, this year guests had an opportunity to view the new Memorial, speak with and say thank you to veterans, and learn about several local veteran supporting organizations.
The weather was perfect and the turnout was great. Congratulations to Vice Mayor John Crane for organizing a different but wonderful Carefree Veteran's Day Celebration.
