Last Wednesday, 9/11/19, Vice Mayor John Crane introduced Bob Jenkins, a former Marine, a Carefree resident and the owner of VetsBuilt Construction Company. Bob, who was in a meeting at Lehman Brothers on the 39th floor of the North World Trade Tower when the first plane hit on 9/11/01, gave a powerful presentation in the Carefree Council Chambers. He spoke about his experiences before, during, and after the attack. The presentation included many slides containing photos from that fateful day. Bob spoke from the heart, without the use of notes, of those experiences which are forever burned into his brain. It was a fascinating personal first-hand account of the events as they unfolded.
Bob began by asking if anyone in the standing-room-only Chambers had ever been on a plane. He then asked if anyone had been to New York. Most hands went up in answer to both questions. He then proceeded to say how people keep telling him he's lucky to be alive. He said we are all lucky to be alive. Anyone who has ever flown or been to New York could just as easily have been on one of those planes or in a building that was hit. The attack was on America and all Americans. Two recurring themes throughout the presentation were that panic kills people, and that people came together to cooperate and help each other that day. He spoke in awe of the courage and dedication of the 1st responders, many of whom died that day, or died later from diseases stemming from that day.
